INTRODUCTION

12:30 – 1:30 PM: Introduction for First-Time Attendees

Experienced Students are also welcome to attend

If you have never attended a teaching with Bill or Ana that focuses on diaphragm awareness and relaxation, then please attend this introduction. If you have attended one before, then you also are welcome to attend. Many people find it very useful to revisit previously learned material in order to deepen and refine their knowledge.

In a fun and informative way, we will teach you:

  • about your diaphragm, the primary muscle with which you breathe. We will explain how it works, its great importance in breathing, and how we use the diaphragm in Taoist Breathing. We’ll teach you how to become more aware of your diaphragm and of how it affects your body and mind.
  • how to start relaxing your breathing. The essence of Taoist Longevity Breathing is relaxation. We’ll help you feel how and where you hold your breath, and teach you our foundation practice for how to let go of such holding.

We’ll finish by explaining our program for learning Taoist Longevity Breathing and how you can advance through it. We’ll discuss how you can learn to enhance your breathing in daily life and in your qigong and tai chi practices.

After this workshop, we’ll send you a guided audio practice and weekly emails with recommendations on how and what to practice until our next workshop.

Prerequisite: None, everyone is welcome.

LEVEL 1 – WHOLE BODY BREATHING AND RELAXATION

Breathing to Relax Your Nervous System, Breathe into and Relax Your Abdomen and Lower Sides

1:45 – 4:30 PM

Much of the stress and tension that we carry in our bodies is lodged in our nerves. Given a little downtime most people can relax their muscles; far fewer can relax tneir nerves that quickly. This is why people go on vacation and only fully relax after a few weeks, when their nerves finally let go.

In this workshop we will explore how you can breathe in a way that promotes whole body nervous system relaxation.

We’ll also explore how you can use the movements of your diaphragm and lungs to awaken, relax, and help you feel better the front and sides of your abdominal area.

In addition, we’ll play with the first stages of how you breathe within the tai chi and qigong forms taught at Brookline Tai Chi.

After this workshop, we’ll send you a guided audio practice and weekly emails with recommendations on how and what to practice until our next workshop.

Prerequisite: Attendance at a Taoist Longevity Breathing teaching with a focus on diaphragm awareness and relaxation, such as the Introduction.

LEVEL 2 – LONGER, SMOOTHER BREATHING FROM YOUR CORE

How to Balance Your Inhales and Exhales

4:45 to 6:00 PM

A key practice in Taoist Breathing is to bring into balance your breathing inhalations and exhalations. Some people find it is easier to breathe in; others to breathe out. Ideally, the two would be equally easy to do.

One way of exploring the balance between your inhalations and exhalations is to breathe in and out for the same duration of time in as smooth, relaxed, and continuous manner as possible. In this way you can identify which is easier.

In this workshop we’ll explore techniques for how you can then smooth and bring into balance your inhales and exhales. These same techniques can help you smooth and balance your emotions and mental processes as well.

After this workshop, we’ll send you a guided audio practice and weekly emails with recommendations on how and what to practice until our next workshop.

Prerequisite: Knowledge of the whole body breathing and relaxation techniques which are being taught in the Level 1 series.
