Introduction

 12:30 – 1:30 PM: Introduction for First-Time Attendees.

Experienced Students are also welcome to attend.

If you have never attended a teaching with Bill or Ana that focuses on diaphragm awareness and relaxation, then please attend this introduction. If you have attended one before, then you also are welcome to attend. Many people find it very useful to revisit previously learned material in order to deepen and refine their knowledge.

In a fun and informative way, we will teach you:

  • about your diaphragm, the primary muscle with which you breathe. We will explain how it works, its great importance in breathing, and how we use the diaphragm in Taoist Breathing. We’ll teach you how to become more aware of your diaphragm and of how it affects your body and mind.
  • how to start relaxing your breathing. The essence of Taoist Longevity Breathing is relaxation. We’ll help you feel how and where you hold your breath, and teach you our foundation practice for how to let go of such holding.

We’ll finish by explaining our program for learning Taoist Longevity Breathing and how you can advance through it. We’ll discuss how you can learn to enhance your breathing in daily life and in your qigong and tai chi practices.

After this workshop, we’ll send you a weekly email reminder with recommendations on what and how you should practice until our next workshop.

Prerequisite: None, everyone is welcome.

Introduction

Attention

Level 1 – Relax Your Breathing, Quiet Your Mind

1:45 – 3:00 PM

At this level of practice, your goals are to:

  • become aware of and comfortable with how you currently breathe;
  • learn how to relax your breathing in different ways; and
  • realize how you can use your breathing to help relax various parts of your body and quiet your mind.

One theme we’ll explore and constantly return to will be how you can continue to better feel and relax your diaphragm. Over time you’ll want to learn how to become aware of, relax, and use the front, sides, and back of your diaphragm.

We offer six workshops at this level. We recommend that you attend all six to learn a full range of Longevity Breathing techniques to relax your breathing and quiet your mind.

This month we will teach “Breathing to Relax Your ‘Insides.’ We’ll explore how you can use the pressures created in your torso by the movement of your diaphragm to gently massage, relax, and soothe everything inside your torso, including internal organs, muscles, ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves.

After this workshop, we’ll send you a weekly email reminder with recommendations on how and what to practice until our next workshop.

In future months, we’ll teach:

  • Breathing to Relax Your Nervous System (September 7)
  • Breathing to Quiet Your Mind (October 5)
  • Breathing to Relax Where You Carry Your Stress (November 9)
  • Breathing to Relax Your Face and Eyes (December 14)

Prerequisite: Attendance at a Taoist Longevity Breathing teaching with a focus on diaphragm awareness and relaxation, such as the Introduction.

Level 2 – Fuller, Deeper Breathing

3:15 – 4:30 PM

Your goals at this level of practice are to:

  • fully use your lung capacity by expanding your lungs downwards, backwards, sidewards, and upwards into your lower, middle and upper back, ribs, and abdomen, rather than forward into your chest.
  • create movement throughout the whole of your torso with every breath (a first step toward “whole body” breathing)
  • maintain even pressures within the front, back, and sides of your torso with each inhale and exhale
  • gently and deeply massage your internal organs, including your heart, liver, spleen, kidneys, and large and small intestines with each breath

At this level, we’ll teach how the up and down movement of your diaphragm creates and releases pressures throughout your torso, and how you can play with those pressures.

This month we will teach “Breathe Into and Relax Your Whole Torso.” We’ll teach how you use the movements of your diaphragm and lungs to create equal pressures everywhere within your torso. We’ll explore how doing so can evenly stimulate and massage everything within your torso.

After this workshop, we’ll send you a weekly email reminder with recommendations on how and what to practice until our next workshop.

In future months, we’ll teach:

  • Breathe Into and Relax Your Lower Sides (September 7)
  • Breathe Into and Relax Your Upper Sides (October 5)
  • Breathe Into and Relax Your Lower Back (November 9)
  • Breathe Into and Relax Your Middle Back (December 14)

Prerequisite: Attend at least one Level 1 event (such as that of the previous section), or an equivalent Longevity Breathing event.

Ideally, you would learn and practice for at least a month all of the techniques we teach in Level 1 before moving on to this level of practice. Please note that our plan is to repeatedly offer this entire set of workshops on a rotating monthly basis, so that you can attend workshops and practice at one level until you became comfortable, and then begin to learn about the next.

Level 2 – Fuller, Deeper Breathing

Attention
We're sorry. Either an error occurred or the event(s) you were attempting to register for may no longer be open for registration.

Level 3 – Longer, Smoother Core Breathing

4:45 to 6:00 pm

Your goals at this level of learning are to:

  • balance your breathing so that when you are practicing you can allow your inhales and exhales to be equally long in duration (the same amount of time for each)
  • gradually relax and extend your breath so that you can comfortably and continuously breathe in and out for longer periods of time, with an initial goal being a 30-second breath (15 seconds in and 15 out) and a longer-term goal being a 2 minute breath (1 in and 1 out)
  • relax and release the bindings in your body and nerves, especially those in and around your diaphragm, which prevent you from breathing softly, smoothly, and continuously
  • breathe energy in and out through the core of your body in coordination with your inhales and exhales

This month we will teach “How to Breathe Into and Relax Your Upper Lungs” When you have learned to breathe with your whole torso in Level 2, especially your upper back and sides, then you are ready to learn how to breathe to awaken and fill your upper lungs. Breathing into your upper lungs among other things helps to increase circulation of blood and energy to and from your head and brain.

After this workshop, we’ll send you a weekly email reminder with recommendations on how and what to practice until our next workshop.

In future months, we’ll teach:

  • How to Balance your Inhales and Exhales (September 7)
  • Lengthen Your Breath through Letting Go (October 5)
  • Let Go of Your Breathing Expectations and Beliefs (November 9)
  • Subject to be Announced (December 14)

Prerequisite: At least partial attainment of the goals of Level 2 (as described in the previous section), through attendance at and practice after Level 2 or equivalent Longevity Breathing events.

Ideally, you would learn and practice for at least a month all of the techniques we teach in Level 2 before moving on to this level of practice. Please note that our plan is to repeatedly offer this entire set of workshops on a rotating monthly basis, so that you can attend workshops and practice at one level until you became comfortable, and then begin to learn about the next.
